The Golden Pen Competition & Awards 1998 and 2001 resulted in overwhelming participation by young and upcoming playwrights. 48 scripts were submitted in 1998 and 52 in 2001. The winners’ scripts were published in the ‘New Namibian Play Volume I and II’ series by Gamsberg Macmillan in 2000 and 2002 respectively. These books were then sent to all secondary schools as well as to all tertiary education institutions (Colleges and Universities) in Namibia free of charge. ‘New Namibian Plays Volume I’ was even made part of the official syllabus for secondary schools in Namibia in the school year 2002.
Description The call for submissions involves a countrywide paid advertising campaign. Four independent judges will select the winning plays in this round, with the presiding judge having a casting vote. The project ends with the awards-giving ceremony. Awards will thus be presented for
the best play by a female playwright
the best play by a male playwright (as a matter of affirmative action) and
the best play on reconciliation (a ‘New-comer’).
Amongst the three the best overall play will be identified.
The three winners will receive price moneys (which form part of the commercial sponsorship, courtesy Corporate Sponsor) and will be offered ‘first option’ for publication in the next volume of New Namibian Plays Vol III to be published in the course of 2017 – 2018. The overall winner will further be offered the opportunity to have his/her play presented as part of the NTN Theatre Zone project in the calendar years 2017 – 2018.
